Each catalog or directory will have its own production rules--most standard and some custom ones. A rule, for example, might say:
Auto Catalog may split a frame across columns on the same page, and across columns on facing pages, but not across non-facing pages. Or...
Auto Catalog should extend the frame to the bottom margin of the page if there is not enough room to start the next entry.
